Abstract
This study attempts to empirically investigate if green attribute centrality affects consumers’ attitudes and purchase intentions, and if regulatory focus and message framing interact with each other in the process. A pretest was conducted with 179 students, then three experiments were performed on the basis of the pretest results. First experiment was implemented with 103 student participants through face-to-face contacts, and second and third experiments were implemented with 84 and 207 non-student participants, respectively through online survey. Major findings can be summarized as follows. First, green attribute centrality had a significant main effect on consumers’ attitudes and purchase intentions. That is, consumers showed higher preference for a beverage and a tire when each product’s green attribute was more central as opposed to less central product benefit. Second, consumers’ regulatory focus moderated the relationship between message framing and consumer responses. That is, for promotion-focused consumers, positively framed messages had a higher effect on consumers’ attitudes and purchase intentions than negatively framed messages. Also, consumers’ attitudes and purchase intentions were higher when promotion-focused consumers were exposed to positively framed messages compared to when prevention-focused consumers were exposed to negatively framed messages. However, for prevention-focused consumers there was no significant difference between positively framed messages and negatively framed messages. The results of this study imply that green products are not naturally perceived as green products by consumers. Therefore, marketers need to convince consumers that the green attribute is related to more central product benefit. However, further studies should examine why consumers’ regulatory focus and message framing do not interact with each other in some cases. Further studies also have to examine the moderating effect of different types of green products and different price levels on consumer responses.
