Abstract
This article aims to identify common characteristics and influences by comparing Goguryeo stone chamber tombs with Northern Wei tombs. To achieve this, I will first examine the development and features of Northern Wei and Northern Wei tomb systems. Then, will compare them with Goguryeo stone chamber tombs from the same period, dividing the comparison into tomb architectural system and burial customs to find traces of their interaction. Northern Wei tomb structures are classified into earth-pit tombs(土洞墓) and brick chamber tombs(磚室墓). Influenced by Xianbei customs, they gradually transitioned from single burials to multiple burials, with clan tombs (族墓) becoming prevalent based on social status. Regarding burial customs, trapezoidal wooden coffins(梯形木棺) were widely used. The primary funerary pottery consisted of long-necked jars(長頸壺) and jars(罐), with a small number of other special burial items. Officials and imperial family members indicated their status through pottery figurines(陶俑). In the Northern Wei period, burial practices became more elaborate, with the emergence of stone coffin beds(石棺床). Comparing Goguryeo stone chamber tombs and Northern Wei tombs, there are instances of Northern Wei tombs being constructed as double-chamber tombs(同穴雙室墓), a common feature in Goguryeo stone chamber tombs. Also, tombs with trapezoidal chambers are found in both cultures, suggesting the possible introduction of trapezoidal wooden coffins into Goguryeo stone chamber tombs. Furthermore, the introduction of table-style coffin stands and altars in the Jangsandong tombs in Daedong is believed to indicate interaction and influence, based on the similar arrangement and form to Northern Wei coffin beds. Regarding burial customs, we focused on excavated artifacts. The most basic funerary pottery in Northern Wei tombs was primarily jars, divided into long-necked jars with narrow, tall necks and jars with wide mouths. The existence and shapes of these patterned pottery(暗紋土器) are similar to the spherical jars of Goguryeo pottery from after the 5th century. Despite the limited types of funerary pottery in Northern Wei tombs, such as long-necked jars and regular jars, the shapes of their mouths and overall forms show significant changes over time. Some Goguryeo stone chamber tomb pottery show direct similarities with Northern Wei tombs. This suggests that Goguryeo pottery underwent changes through direct interaction with the pottery culture of the Northern Dynasties, including Northern Wei. Given the appearance of flower vases(花柄) in Northern Dynasty tomb carvings, it’s possible these jars were interred as flower vases for floral offerings. Additionally, we proposed the possibility that the stone Buddha statue excavated from Taeseong-ri Daedong tombs No.8 is a stone figurine(石俑), based on its comparison with Northern Wei pottery figurines. Goguryeo and Northern Wei were states that shared a flourishing period from the mid-5th to the 6th century. They maintained friendly relations until the fall of Northern Wei, engaging in socio-cultural exchanges. This is partially confirmed by several similarities in their tomb and burial customs. In terms of tomb structures, the use of trapezoidal wooden coffins and burial cultures centered on jar-type pottery shows strong homogeneity as common burial practices among northern nomadic peoples, distinguishing them from those of the Southern Dynasties, Baekje, and Silla. Furthermore, the use of table-style coffin stands and altars, and the similarity between the stone Buddha statue and Northern Wei pottery figurines, suggest that the influence of Northern Wei burial culture, which was undergoing changes due to the Sinicization policy, partially affected Goguryeo. Sinicization policy of Northern Wei, it underwent a process of transformation into a very diverse and splendid burial culture due to mutual cultural exchange between the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the flourishing of Buddhist culture, and the active adoption of Western Region cultures. During this period, while Goguryeo was aware of these developments, it did not actively adopt them. However, it can be seen that Goguryeo adopted some elements to develop its own unique tomb and burial culture.
