Abstract
The Wangjianglou type consists of four-lugged jar, two-lugged jar, bowl with ring foot, and bowl, which gradually evolved from indigenous Bronze Age pottery traditions by adding features like band-shaped lugs, knobs, and other hanging motifs. The tomb styles shift from Large Stone-Covered stone, Large Stone-Covered stone Tomb, or Unplatformed stone-mounded tombs to predominantly Unplatformed stone-mounded tombs and Platformed stone-mounded tombs, with cremation as the central burial practice. The pottery assemblage and tomb system of the Wangjianglou type emerged in the Hun River basin (3rd century BCE–1st century CE), gradually distinguishing itself from other regions. While the Wangjianglou type cannot be considered a homogenous archaeological group, it holds significance as a spatiotemporal cluster of materials (centered on the Wangjianglou tombs, circa 1st century BCE–1st century CE) that are more proximate to early Goguryeo than previously discussed connections to the Liaodong Peninsula, Fushun, Benxi or Liaobei regions. Despite varying origins and technical differences among individual tombs, the Wangjianglou type exhibits regional traits: stone-cist tombs with piled stones and a pottery combination dominated by four-lugged jar/two-lugged jar with band-shaped lugs and knobs. Its loose formal coherence and distinct regionality—setting it apart from neighboring cultures—warrant typological classification. Crucially, the Northeastern-style New four-lugged jar and bronze dagger found across Wangjianglou-type sites not only clarify chronological positions within the type but also demonstrate continuity between the late phase of unplatformed stone-mounded tombs and early Goguryeo. In material culture terms, the post-Platformed stone-mounded tombs phase saw progressive “stylization,” with the Wangjianglou type representing a pre-stylization stage before Goguryeo’s distinct material culture emerged. Though subject to revision with new data, the Wangjianglou type is currently divided into:Stone-cist tomb phase (2nd–early 1st century BCE) and Unplatformed stone-mounded tomb phase (late 1st century BCE–early 2nd century CE), with the latter overlapping chronologically with early Goguryeo.
