Abstract

Until recently, research on the Koguryo tombs had focused on the structural characteristics, origins, and processes of change of the tombs. Apart from the issue of the main character in a few royal tombs, research on the buried individuals themselves, such as their identities or the methods used to dispose of the bodies, has been comparative in nature. In fact, it has been under performing This study examines the principles and processes of construction based on the location and distribution pattern of the Koguryo tombs, confirming the existence of certain examples. Additionally, it investigates the process of change in the tomb and funeral rites of the Stone mound tomb and Stone chamber tomb. Through an analysis of the tomb's structure and literary records, this study establishes the presence of Confucian funeral rites even before the full institutionalization of Confucianism, such as Taehak(太學) and Gyeongdang(扃堂). Although there is a scarcity of direct data, certain aspects of cremation and burning rituals are examined based on examples from the Seokchon-dong tombs. Additonally, the manner in which Confucian ideas were manifested in Koguryo is examined based on the differences in the expressions of the bodies depicted in tomb murals. The study results suggest the necessity of investigating the process by which the Koguryo tombs and the bodies buried within them were transformed in a Confucian manner, as well as how the Koguryo people sometimes accommodated and at other times resisted Confucian culture and values. Despite the limitations imposed by the lack of direct physical evidence related to tomb subjects and bodies, this study departs from the perspective of focusing solely on the chronology and transition of tomb rituals for the Koguryo tombs, instead concentrating on burial practices. By restoring the funeral rites and examining the changing treatment of the buried bodies, this study provides a three-dimensional understanding of the evolution of the Koguryo society and the perceptions of its people at the time.
