Abstract

All phrases obligatorily contain a head, and (optionally) from one to several peripheral elements. Some of the peripheral elements are arguments and others are modifiers. Internal arguments among the arguments are called complements, while modifiers are adjuncts. The distinction between complements and adjuncts has a long tradition in grammatical theory. Since it is a highly vexed distinction, no single syntactic or semantic theory alone cannot successfully explain the properties of complements and adjuncts. Furthermore, the properties of argument structure must be distinguished syntactically and semantically, and the better understanding of them comes from syntax-semantics parallel architecture and its syntax-semantics interface principles.
