Abstract

Some syntactic and semantic phenomena related with conjunction are examined within the framework of Generalized Categorial Grammar. The main focus is how to fix the argument structure of two-complement (i.e. ditransitive) verbs. When we examine nonconstituent conjunction structures with two-complement verbs, the argument structure ascribed by Dowty and Steedtman seems to be right as far as word order is concerned. By contrast, when we consider the interpretation of reflexives, we seem to need the argument structure assumed by the Wrapping analysis of Bach. To reconcile those seemingly incompatible analyses, I propose several solutions, among which is the postulation of two independent dimensions (or tiers) of argument structure. That is, in addition to purely syntactic, or order-concerning categorial dimension represented by such category specifications as Y/X, a more meaning-related (category-type) dimension represented by such category specifications as [Y|X] is assumed to exist. The latter kind of categorial specification corresponds to semantic types: TYP([Y|X])=. This analysis is possible only in the flexible framework of Categorial Grammar, which uses functional composition and type lifting as well as simple functional application.
