초록
A number of researchers have identified codeswitching (CS) used by bilinguals as a communicative strategy for discourse co- construction. This view is against the traditional idea to see CS as a by-product of linguistic deficiency. However, not much is known bout why Korean-English bilinguals utilize CS in their verbal interactions. This study was designed to address the question and investigated the functions of Korean-English bilinguals' CS. Their verbal interactions were video-taped and analyzed from conversation analysis viewpoints. The findings suggest that CS serves a functional role for dynamic interactions by strengthening in-groupness and solidarity, provoking addressee's responses through contrast, and enhancing smooth topic shift.
