초록
This study examined functions of code-switching in Korean EFL learners’ conversation by using a learner corpus of conversation, which enables us to investigate large sized data. The study specifically compared differences in frequency of the code-switching functions in two contexts: when there were one or more foreigners in the conversation group (CF) and when there were only Korean speakers (CK). The two respectively represent EFL contexts where learners use English to communicate with foreign visitors and where they practice English as curricular or extra-curricular activities. I analyzed 505 instances produced by the learners of varied proficiency levels and set up 7 functions of code-switching: ‘compensating for the lack of L2 knowledge,’ ‘clarifying one’s message,’ ‘delivering culture-specific message,’ ‘meta-linguistic function,’ ‘meta-discourse function,’ ‘quotation,’ and ‘unintentional remark.’ The analysis revealed that many of the instances had two or more of these functions. In addition, the learners in the CK context used significantly more instances of code-switching in ‘L2 compensation,’ ‘clarification,’ ‘meta-linguistic / discourse function,’ while the learners in the CF reserved code-switching except when they talked about culture-specific topics. The results suggest that the learners understand social function of code-switching that using L1 is associated with solidarity and personalization while using L2 with objectification.
