Abstract

Dobongseowon (5宣화書봄,書K: a Confucian academy and shrine) was builtin Mountain Dobongsan in 1573 to remember Jo Gwang-jo 1482 〜 1519). Jo Gwang-jo, active in the second half of Joseon period, represented the mainConfucian school and its branches, thus making him very important for Confucianschools. And, as conflicts were sharpened between Confiician scholar powers overtime, Jo Gwang-jo gradually gained legitimate practical authority. In addition, such typical incident is the argument over Song Si-yeol (_寺界!,1607 — 1689) joining Dobongseowon. In particular, Song Si-yeol attached importanceto Dobongseowon which was dedicated to the remembrance of Jo Gwang-jo, andwhile Song Si-yeol lived, he visited the shrine and positively expressed his identityas a Neo-Confucian scholar. And, such pursuit was left through his calligraphiesrock-carved in Dobong Valley. Left in Dobong Valley centered in Dobongseowon were not only Song Si-yeol’srock-carved calligraphy, but also rock-carved writings that important figures in themid and second half of Joseon period borrowed from scriptures. Such figures, asconfirmed by their writings, include Song Jun-gil (처受舍、 1606 〜 1672), KimSu-jeung (술管, 1624 〜 1701), Gwon Sang-ha (■!현夏:, 1641 〜 1721), and Yi Jae(추I幸,1680〜 1746), and they are all related to Song Si-yeol’s school, and to politicalfactions such as Seoin (S人) and Noron (병I命). The second half of Joseon periodduring which these figures were active was the time when the collapsed socialorder was being reconstructed and when the impoverished cultural capabilities werebeing restored. It was also a time when political and cultural tension and easingalternately occurred from the strained relations with the Qing such as Song Si-yeol’scause of respecting the Ming dynasty and his insistence on conquering the Qing Dobongseowon (5宣화書봄,書K: a Confucian academy and shrine) was builtin Mountain Dobongsan in 1573 to remember Jo Gwang-jo 1482 〜 1519).
