Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the detailed patterns, meanings, and forms of mirrors, and to examine the characteristics and new trends reflected in mirrors, using bronze mirrors in the Joseon Dynasty as a research subject. These bronze mirrors are artifacts that have not been interested so far, and have even been misunderstood as made during the Goryeo period. Therefore, this study is meaningful in that it examines the production period of bronze mirror more specifically and newly examines the bronze mirror of the Joseon Dynasty, which has not been known yet.In addition, it is expected that it will be helpful to examine the development patterns and trends of domestic mirrors by examining the stylistic and physical characteristics of mirrors in the Joseon Dynasty. Neo-Confucianism emerged after the end of the Goryeo Dynasty and became the ruling ideology of the Joseon Dynasty. As a result, the influence of Confucianism gradually expanded throughout the politics, economy, society and culture of the Joseon Dynasty. In this situation, the philosophy and ideas of Confucianism began to be reflected in the mirror, which is a living craft used to reflect his face and appearance every day.In particular, in the Joseon Dynasty, mirrors containing various phrases and characters, which means self-reflection and training, were newly produced. The literary people of Joseon tried to have a good heart by respecting Confucian teachings, and they always wanted to be alert and awake by engraving these letters in the mirror. This was connected to the situation of the time when it changed from the end of the 15th century to the 16th century and tried to practice Neo- Confucianism through self-discipline based on the study of mind(心學). These mirrors of the Joseon Dynasty were made in a way that improves efficiency by saving time and cost. Considering the convenience and productivity of the production method, the method of pressing the pattern with the stamp type inscription tool was very popular in the Joseon Dynasty. This method has been passed down since the Goryeo period. In particular, mirrors of Confucian letters such as ‘整衣冠’ and ‘見爾慮’ including mirrors with Buddhist characters represented the unique aesthetics and styles of the Joseon Dynasty. In addition, the Joseon Dynasty was created in the form of a magnifying glass that can see a part of the face by adding a small concave mirror away from the traditional way of filling the back of the mirror with a pattern. This is a groundbreaking structure that uses both sides of the mirror, and it can be seen that it started gradually from the late Goryeo period. However, it can be understood as a form that became common as the functionality and practicality of mirrors came into being more important to consumers in the Joseon Dynasty.
