Abstract

There are a total of 32 mirrors excavated from the remains of a building in the Joseon Dynasty in 10 places. These mirrors are thought to have been used in daily life during the Joseon Dynasty, and these mirrors can be said to be materials that can be used to examine the types and characteristics of the Joseon Dynasty that have not been known until now. Looking at the unearthed mirrors, it can be divided into the type of mirror inherited from the Goryeogyeong(Goryeo Dynasty Mirror, 高麗鏡), the type of Waegyeong(the Japanese mirror, 倭鏡) imported from Japan, and the type of Hangyeong(the Han Dynasty Mirror, 漢鏡), which is one of the old tools. The Joseon Dynasty’s bronze mirrors, which inherited the Goryeo’s bronze mirrors, are representative of the Chrysanthemum pattern mirror(菊花文鏡) and the Sanskrit pattern mirror(梵字文柄鏡), which were used for a considerable period from the late Goryeo Dynasty to the late Joseon Dynasty. These two types of mirrors are noted as mirrors of unique shapes and patterns that are difficult to find in other countries. In addition, the Japanese craft, Waegyeong(Japanese mirror, 倭鏡), is a craft that informs the trade relationship with Japan at the time, and can be viewed in terms of distribution and use of domestic imported goods. Waegyeong is a handicraft decorated with Japan's unique Japanese style, and since the inflow of Japan, the consumption class is wide, ranging from the private sector to the royal family and temples. This was possible because the number of Waegyeongs introduced through Waegwan in the late Joseon Dynasty was quite large. And most of the Hangyeong are replicas that have been duplicated with the original mirrors, or that are modified while replicating them. This is the background in which the trend of appreciation(玩賞), which had been popular since the Joseon Dynasty, was very popular in the late Joseon Dynasty. It is interpreted that Hangyeong, a Ancient bronze ware, was also copied and used through the tendency of revival of the antiques in crafts at the time or the production method of Godonggi confirmed in literature. In addition, the trend of appreciation(玩賞), which had been popular from before the Joseon Dynasty, continued into the Joseon Dynasty, and was used by replicating the ancient mirror, Hangyeong. Since these mirrors are mostly circular, it is interpreted that unlike the previous period, circular mirrors were preferred in the Joseon Dynasty. There was even a case where the handle of a the handle mirror(柄鏡) was cut out and used in a circular shape, indicating that the people of the Joseon Dynasty preferred a circular mirror. And, bronze mirrors, which were excavated mainly from tombs in the previous period, are found in the remains of buildings centering on the Seoul area in the late Joseon Dynasty, and the extent of the excavated area is also expanded. The unearthed mirror is a representative example of an excavated area in Cheongjin-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, and this is the location where the streetcar was located in the late Joseon Dynasty. On the other hand, it is difficult to find a case where bronze mirrors were excavated in the central district of Seoul, which is the center of the southern villages(南村) and northern villages(北村) where the military commander lived in the late Joseon Dynasty. In other words, the trend of excavation of bronze mirrors in the late Joseon Dynasty shows a phenomenon of regional ubiquity. It is difficult to affirm because it is only limited data, but this suggests that the class of using bronze mirrors was concentrated in the private sector, and presumably the fact that glass mirrors were distributed in Korea at the time suggests that the use class of bronze mirrors may have changed to the private sector.
