Abstract

The history of museums with a modern sense, which began in the West, spans over two hundred years, with Chinese museums boasting of over a hundred years’ history. The establishment of a museum with modern meaning in China came later than that in the West, but there was a great advantage in the construction of a history museum or an art museum. This is because the cultural heritage of the long-gone dynasty remained everywhere with vivid records on the ground and underground, with the integration and division of several dynasties on the Chinese continent. Meanwhile, Chinese museums have expanded and reopened, focusing on a large number of excavated collections and showcasing various exhibitions. In the 100-year history of the Chinese Museum, the construction of a museum in the modern sense is deeply related to the Xinhai Revolution. Just as the Louvre Palace, which used to be the palace of the Bourbon royal family, opened through the French Revolution, the Palace Museum was opened in the Forbidden City (紫禁城), which was the palace of the Qing Dynasty (淸朝) after the Xinhai Revolution (辛亥革命). The National Museum located east of Tiananmen Square in Beijing is a representative museum that started after the Chinese socialist revolution. To deal with China’s museum history, it is necessary to understand the political situation of society as in Western Europe. This is because museums, both East and West, have developed very closely alongside political changes. The text begins with Chapter Ⅱ. “The Origin of Ancient Western Museums and Ancient China.” Chapter Ⅲ. “The Yangwu Movement (洋務運動) and China’s First Modern Museum” introduced Nantong Museum (南通博物苑), which was founded in 1905 by a businessman named Zhang Jian (張謇). Chapter Ⅳ. “The Xinhai Revolution and the Republic of China” deals with efforts to open modern museums such as the Palace Museum in Beijing, National Museum of China, and National Museum of China in Nanjing(南京) after the Xinhai Revolution. Chapter Ⅴ. “The Formation of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 and the Museum of the 1950s” and Chapter Ⅵ. “The Cultural Revolution and the Museum of the 1960s and 1970s” introduced the situation of museums that entered into a recession in the midst of the efforts made in the early days of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the chaotic political situation during the period of the Cultural Revolution. Chapter Ⅶ described the process of “Reform-Open of the People’s Republic of China and the rapid development of the Chinese Museum since the 1980s.” Chapter Ⅷ. “Modernization and Internationalization of Museums from 2000 to Present” explains the recent developments in museums and the emergence of various museums. It also introduced two exhibitions that show the trend of exhibition. Through the 100-year history of the Chinese Museum mentioned in this article, we hope to provide basic materials to examine how the Chinese museum will develop in the future.
