Abstract

Indictment on Marzeah in Amos 6:4-7: On Syncreticism or Social Injustice? With the issue of the purpose of the marzeaḥ, some scholars emphasize the funerary aspect. They argue that In the feast participants offered comfort by sharing meals and drinks with the mourners. Others emphasize the memorial aspect. They consider the marzeaḥ as the feast for and with ‘deceased ancestors’ or ‘deceased heros.’ Recently Greer insists that the marzeaḥ as described in Amos 6:4-7 was a religious event. According to him, the use of mizraq vessel in Amos 6:6 is definitively syncretistic practice adopted from the nations around Israel. Epigraphic and iconographic evidence suggests that ritual vessels were used at cultic banquets in the ancient Near East. In Greer’s opinion, the cause of woe was the offense of syncretism, rather than the luxurious life. The present writer argues that Amos's indictment of the feast described in Amos 6.4-7 was not religious but social. Wealth and high-rank in the society apparently were prerequisites for participation. Amos 6:4-7 should not be dealt with separately. This unit is one of his judgment speeches on the doom of the elites of Israel and its luxury-living society. In addition, there is no reference to the pagan religion, nor to any form of communication with the deceased ancestors or heroes in Amos 6:4-7. The target is toward "participants" in such banquets. The reason for the destruction is the luxury-living of the elites at the cost of the poor and Israel's failure to bring forth the fruit of justice in the society.
