Abstract
The purpose of this article is to explain when and how the oldest book of Amos was handed down and reinterpreted through the analysis of Amos 5:21-27 and 6:1-7. The basic text of 6:1-7, which belongs to the oldest book of Amos, criticizes the luxurious lifestyles of the northern Israelite leaders, which are based on social injustice (particularly unfair trials), and pronounces their impending destruction. This text was handed down and reinterpreted in Judah after the fall of the northern Israel. Amos’ prophecy of doom against the northern Israel was fulfilled and his prophecy is applied to Judah through the reinterpretation. In this way Amos’ prophecy of doom is actualized and becomes a living word of God. The basic text in Amos 5:21-27 criticizes the leaders of the northern Israel for their luxurious religious practices inconsistent with an unrighteous life. The exhortation to realization of justice and righteousness in this basic text, when reinterpreted in the post-exilic period, is connected to the sin of idolatry and transformed to the basis for the prophecy of doom to all of Israel. Here the concept that best illustrates the process of tradition is ‘Fortschreibung’. ‘Fortschreibung’ is the creative and theological work which interprets one’s own historical situation through the tradition and simultaneously reinterprets the tradition to apply it to the situation. Through the ‘Fortschreibung’, Amos’ message continues to be actualized and proclaimed, being applied in a new historical context and reinterpreted.
