Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of religion on the decision to suspend the treatment of "life-prolonging medical care". More specifically, the analysis model included social and anthropological background variables and attitudes toward death, and empirically analyzed the impact of the degree of attendance and belief by religious type on the decision to discontinue "life-prolonging medical care" treatment based on non-religious people. It used the 『Korean General Social Survey 2013』 sample and a binomial logistic model was used. The analysis results are as follows. First, in social and anthropological background variables, only high household income and education levels were likely to agree to a "life-prolonging medical care" discontinuation. The higher the attitude toward death, the more likely it was to agree to a "life-prolonging medical care" discontinuation. Second, Catholic believers, who are more frequently present than non-religious, were more likely to oppose the decision to discontinue the treatment of "life-prolonging medical care" in the influence of the degree of attendance and the degree of belief by religious type on the decision of discontinuation of the treatment of "life-prolonging medical care". And Catholics and Protestants, who are more or less religious than non-religious, are more likely to oppose the decision to suspend "life-prolonging medical care". In this study, we confirmed that the Catholic Church, which has a conservative attitude toward halting the treatment of "life-prolonging medical care" had moved to a believer, and the results showed that in the case of religious believers and Protestants, we were opposed to human intervention in the death of humans, not gods.
