본 연구는 좋은 사회를 위한 종교의 사회적 역할에 대한 고찰의 일환으로 종교와사회통합의 문제를 다루는 것을 목적으로 한다. 민주화 운동기는 친군부와 민주화 세력이 대립하면서 특히 그 배경에는 반공을 중심으로 동일 종교 내 신학 간의 차이가종교계의 분열을 가져왔고, 민주화 이후에는 일부 종교기반 시민단체들의 정치적 활동이 사회 갈등을 일으키는 요인이 되고 있다. 이와 같이 1970년대 이후 사회적 갈등에는 종교의 책임이 작지 않다는 점에서 사회통합을 위한 종교의 역할이 요구되거니와, 그 역할 중 하나는 종교시민단체의 두 중심유형인 돌봄 위주와 정의구현 중심의 단체가 어느 쪽에 중점을 두던, 사회통합으로 나아가기 위해서는 일단 돌봄과 정의를 동시적으로 구현하는 균형을 추구해야 한다는것이다. 돌봄과 정의는 본질적으로 상호보완적이고 공존하는 양립성을 갖고 있는 것으로, 이러한 균형은 종교시민단체와 비종교 일반시민단체를 구분하는 가장 큰 특성이되면서 지나친 정치 지향성이나, 반대로 돌봄에 치우쳐 사회적 모순을 가져온 이유와그 개선에 대한 지나친 소홀함을 극복하여 사회갈등을 완화시킬 수 있는 것이다. 다른 하나는 종교공공사회학의 실천으로, 종교공공사회학은 종교를 포함한 다양한문제들에 대해 대중을 찾아가 그들과 직접 대화하고 소통하면서 사회 이슈화를 시도하는 것이다. 따라서 종교공공사회학이 보여주는 종교의 역할은 정의구현이나 정치 개혁과 같은 정치적 이슈보다는 시민사회에서의 공공성에 좀 더 초점을 둔다. 이러한 점에서 사회통합에서의 종교의 역할은 돌봄과 정의의 균형과 공존을 추구하면서 공공성을 향한 종교공공사회학의 구체적인 실천에 있는 것으로 판단된다.
Abstract
This article aims at exploring the religion and social integration as a part of researches on religion's social role for good society. It examines social conflicts caused by the difference between Christian theologies revolving around anti-communism during the Democratization Movement period and by the inordinate political orientations of some religion-based civil organizations after democratization. The reason why the role of religion is required is because of responsibility of religion for such social conflict. One of its roles is that religion-based civil organizations should seek balance between care and justice, whether focusing on former or latter. Care and justice are complementary and compatible, and their balance can become key characteristics differentiating the religion-based civil organizations from non-religious ones. It might also alleviate social conflict by overcoming excessive political activism or indifferences to social contradiction and its reform. The other one is the practice of the public sociology of religion. The public sociology encourages sociologists to converse with wider non-academic audience about the issues of public concern. Likewise, those who engage in public sociology of religion try to converse and communicate with publics concerning public problems involving religion, and highlight the role of religion by focusing on the publicness in civil society rather than political issues such as realization of justice or political reform. In this regard, the role of religion for social integration seems to lie in concrete practice of public sociology of religion toward publicness, bringing into balance and coexistence of care and justice.
