종교자원봉사의 특성과 시민사회에서의 의의: 종교기반 시민사회단체의 활동을 중심으로

본 연구는 종교기반 자원봉사활동의 이론과 실제에 대한 고찰로 종교의 사회적 역할, 특히 시민사회의 발전을 위한 종교의 역할과 의의에 대한 고찰의 일환으로 수행된다. 종교계 자원봉사는 무료봉사는 물론이고 자신의 돈을 내어 봉사기금을 마련하며, 미래의 상급을 기대한다는 특성을 갖는다. 그러나 무엇보다 종교 교리가 보여주는 돌봄이나 베풂의 이념과 함께 집회 참석을 통해 형성되는 사회적 네트워크가 종교 사회적 자본의 핵심을 이룬다는 점에서 특히 종교기반 시민단체의 활동이 주목된다. 이들은 단지 서비스 제공을 넘어 그 목표를 시민사회운동으로 확장시킴으로써 시민사회를 활성화하는 데에 기여하는 것이다. 종교자원봉사 시민단체 중 특히 부각되는 것은 국내외의 의료단체와 국제구호단체들로, 이들은 인명존중사회 만들기, 갈등 극복을 통한 사회통합이나 세계평화와 같은 더 높은 차원의 활동에서도매우 중요한 역할을 담당할 수 있다는 가능성을 제시해 줌으로써 종교의 사회적 의의를 제고시킨다.
Abstract
This study is attempted as part of researches on social role of religion in development of civil society through examining the theory and the practice of religious volunteering. The faith-based volunteers deliver service without financial compensation, but it is assumed that volunteering is also beneficial for the volunteers with future religious reward expected. Above all social networks formed within congregations as well as religious principles of care and giving are conducive to social capital, and therefore more attention needs to be paid to religion-based volunteering civil organizations. They contribute beyond mere service activities to revitalization of civil society by expanding it as civil society movements. The most significant activities of the organizations are especially their focus on medical treatment and international relief. These organizations highlight the social role of religion through providing the possibilities that volunteering can take important part even in higher level of activities like making life-respect-society, social integration and world peace.
