초록

본고는 사회학의 일 분야로서 사회문제의 해결을 위한 종교의 역할을 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 하지만 궁극적으로는 이를 통해 공공사회학 내지는 종교공공사회학의 특성과 기여를 밝히는 데에 초점을 둔다. 공공사회학은 그동안 지나치게 이론에 경도되어 우리 삶과 유리된 것으로 비판받는 사회학의 연구자들이 적극적으로 학계 밖으로 나아가 공중을 만나고, 사회문제들을 파악하며, 여론을 환기시켜 정책에 반영시키는 것이 필요하다는 점에서 출발한 것이다. 무엇보다 사회문제는 사회에 해를 끼친다는 부정적인 의미와 함께 사회 변화를 가져오는 계기가 될 수 있다는 점에서 공공사회학이 추구하는 시민사회의 방어와 공중 참여를 통한 정의구현의 한 중요 영역으로 고찰될 필요가 있다. 그러나 공공사회학의 필요성에 대한 인정에도 불구하고 시민사회와 공중들을 직접 접촉하면서 문제 해결을 추구하는 그 실천 활동에 대해서는 많은 우려와 비판이 제기된 바 있거니와, 바로 그 지점에 종교의 자리가 보인다. 종교시민단체들은 공중을 대상으로 돌봄을 수행하고, 다양한 사회문제들을 파악해서 정의를 구현하는 역할을 한다. 공중들과의 관계에서 발생하는 문제는 대부분 서로의 차이를 인정하지 않은 데에서 기인하거니와, 종교윤리는 공존을 지향한다는 점에서도 그 차이를 극복하는 데에 도움이 될 것이다. 사회문제는 사회 모두에 해가 되는 문제이기는 하지만 그 문제가 개인에게서 시작되는 것이 많거니와, 종교는 이를 개인적으로 또는 집단적으로 접근할 수 있는 것이다. 이러한 점에서 공공사회학의 하위분류로서 종교공공사회학은 확실히 사회문제 해결에 관한 공공사회학의 이론과 실제 사이의 간격을 좁히는 데에 기여한다.

Abstract

This article is attempted to investigate the role of religion for solving the social problems, but the ultimate goal is to explore the characteristics and contribution of public sociology as well as public sociology of religion. Public sociology starts from the perspective that it is necessary for sociologists to defend civil society, grapple with public participation, invoke public opinion on social problems and reflect them on a policy. Above all social problems require to be examined as an important domain of justice implementation, since they have not only negative meaning to be harmful to society, but also opportunities to bring about social change. Despite the recognition of necessity of public sociology a lot of criticism and concern have been raised about the practice activities like public participation, but there is a place of religion at that very spot. Religion-based civil organizations can take remedial action intended for the publics, and play the role for justice implementation. Problems occurring between public sociologists and the publics stem from lack in acknowledging the mutual difference, and so religious ethics aiming for coexistence might be helpful for overcoming the difference. Although social problems mean issues detrimental to society, they start in most cases from the individuals; it may be only religion to allow the individual or collective approach, and in this regard public sociology of religion, as a sub-areas of public sociology, is sure to contribute to bridging the gap between theory and practice of public sociology for solving modern social problems.
