5세기 기독론 형성 과정에 대한 한 고찰

예수는 그리스도다. 이 서술은 진실인가? 그것이 진실인지 어떻게 아는가? 이것은 우리 엄마는 세계에서 제일 훌륭한 요리사라는 말과 논리적 구조가 어떻게 다른가? 예수에게 붙여진 이름은 많다. 예수는 구주, 해방자, 화해자로 불린다. 흑인 신학자들은 예수가 해방자인지 화해자인지 치열한 논쟁을 벌였다. 예수는 서로 다른 사람들에게 다르게 이해되고 받아들여진다. 이를 염두에 두고 저자는 5세기 기독론 형성 과정을 다시 추적해 보려고 한다. 서로 다른 두 지역 즉 알렉산드리아 학파와 안디옥 학파가 Theotokos, Christotokos, ousia, hypostasis, prosopon, physis 등의 용어를 서로 다르게 해석하여 치열하게 싸웠다. 이 싸움의 결과 알렉산드리아의 주교 시릴은 정통으로 남고 안디옥 학파의 콘스탄티노플 주교 네스토리우스는 이단으로 몰렸다. 시릴은 로마(천주)교회의 성인으로 존경받고 있다. 한편 네스토리우스는 이단으로 몰렸으나 자신을 추종하는 사람들에 의해 새로운 교회가 만들어졌다. 동방정통교회는 에베소 공의회나 칼케돈 공의회 신조를 받아들이지 않는다. 네스토리우스 교회는 동쪽 페르시아를 거쳐 당나라까지 복음을 전했다. 이러한 사실은 아직 기독론 논쟁이 끝나지 않았음을 알려 준다. 이 추적을 통해 알려진 사실은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 네스토리우스를 정죄한 에베소 공의회와 칼케돈 공의회는 동로마제국 내 많은 사람들에게 문제를 불러 일으켰다. 둘째, 20세기 초 사라진 것으로 알려진 네스토리우스의 문헌이 발견되면서 네스토리우스에 대한 새로운 연구가 촉발되었다. 그 결과 네스토리우스는 더 많은 신학자들에게 동정을 받게 되었다. 네스토리우스는 자신이 정죄 받은 죄목인 네스토리우스주의자가 아닐 수도 있다는 주장이 많이 등장했다. 셋째, 네스토리우스에 대한 재평가는 그 작업이 누구에 의해평가되느냐에 따라 그 결과가 달라질 수 있다. 로마(천주)교회 신학자는 대체로 네스토리우스에 대해 부정적이다. 반면 루터교회 신학자들, 동방교회 소속 신학자들은 네스토리우스에 대해 우호적이다. 이 사실은 우리로 겸손하게 하고 다른 사람들에게 더 귀를 기울이게 만든다.
Abstract
“Jesus is the Christ.” Is this statement true? If then, how do you know it true? Is this statement’s logic different from that of “My mom is the best cook in the world?” Jesus has many names. Jesus is called as the savor, the liberator, the reconciliator, etc. Afro-American theologians have debated over whether Jesus is the liberator or the reconciliator. Jesus is understood and accepted differently by different peoples. With this in mind, the author wants to retrace the procedure of Christological formation in the fifth century. Two different schools that are Alexandrian School and Antiochian School fought against each other based on their different understandings on Theotokos, Christotokos, ousia, hypostasis, prosopon, physis etc. The result of this conflict is that Syril of Alexandria is orthodox while Nestorius of Antioch is condemned as heresy. Syril is revered as a Saint of Roman Catholic Church while Nestorius has been expelled as heresy making him the founder of Nestorian Church and Eastern Orthodox church. The fact that Nestorius started a new church shows that the Christological controversy is never ended. The results of this retrace are as follows. First, the condemnation of Nestorius by the Council of Ephesus (431 A.D.) and Chalcedon (451.A.D.) has created many conflicts among many peoples in Eastern Roman empire. Second, in the early twenty century, the reevaluation of Nestorius was started because of new materials were available. Third, theologians who are engaged in the debates cannot be avoid of their denominational or church background.
