4세기 후반 그리스도론의 역사에 대한 재평가 ― 나지안주스의 그레고리우스를 중심으로

나지안주스의 그레고리우스는 말씀-육신 그리스도론 주창자인가, 아니면 말씀-인간 그리스도론 주창자인가? 카파도키아 교부인 그레고리우스는 그리스도론적 입장에 관한 한 그리스도의 일치성을 강조하는 알렉산드리아 학파에 속하는가, 아니면 그리스도의 두 본성을 강조하는 안디옥 학파에 속하는가? 4–5세기 그리스도론에 대한 교과서적 설명은 대체로 말씀-육신 대 말씀-인간 유형, 혹은 알렉산드리아 학파 대 안디옥 학파의 대결 구도 속에서 교부들의 사상을 분류하고 분석하려고 한다. 하지만 이 해석학적 틀을 적용할 때 다른 교부들의 경우에 비해 나지안주스 그레고리우스의 그리스도론에 대한 평가는 매우 상반되는 모습을보인다. 이것은 양자 대립 구도의 해석학적 틀 자체의 부적절성을 암시한다. 이 글에서 필자는 나지안주스 그레고리우스의 그리스도론에 대해 상반된 결론에 도달한 여러 문헌을 분석하면서 4–5세기 그리스도론의 역사를 이해하는 통상적인 해석학적 틀의 부적절성을 보여주려고 한다. 이와 관련해서 4세기 후반 그리스도론의 역사를 바르게 이해하기 위해서는 단순히 아폴리나리우스주의와 정통 그리스도론 사이의 논쟁만 다룰 것이아니라, 말씀-육신 유형의 극단적 형태와 말씀-인간 유형의 극단적 형태 사이의 논쟁을 배경으로 일종의 스킬라와 카립디스 사이에서 정통 그리스도론이 중심을 잡아가는 과정을 다루는 것이 바람직하다고 주장할것이다.
Abstract
Is Gregory of Nazianzus a proponent of Word-flesh Christology or Wordhuman Christology? As far as the Christological issues are concerned, does Gregory, one of the prominent Cappadocian Fathers, belong to the Alexandrian school emphasizing the unity of Christ, or to the Antiochene school that emphasizing the two natures of Christ? According to the descriptions of influential textbooks, the history of the Christological doctrines through the 4th and 5th centuries tend to classify and analyze Christological ideas of any theologian in the framework of confrontation between Word-flesh versus World-human views, or between Alexandrian versus Antiochene schools. With this analytical framework applied, however, different scholars have come to different conclusions regarding Gregory’s Christology, which, in my judgment, suggests the inadequacy of the applied analytical framework itself. In this article, I will analyze the literature that has reached mutually conflicting conclusions about Gregory’s Christology and show the inadequacy of this widespread analytical framework. Furthermore, in order to better understand the history of Christology especially in the late 4th century, I will suggest, it would not be desirable to pay exclusive attention to the debate between Apollinarianism and orthodox Christology, but rather to explore how the so-called ‘orthodox’ theologians have navigated the Scylla and Charybdis of Word-flesh and Wordhuman Christology.
