종교개혁의 스캔들, 그 불관용의 역사에 대한 역사-재구성적 성찰 : 독일 농민봉기 탄압을 중심으로

초록

급진주의 종교개혁(the Radical Reformation)에 대한 연구 역사를 보면, 뮌처 등 혁명적 개혁가들은 상대적으로 제대로 평가되지 못했다. 그들이 가졌던 개혁의 진정성 과 그들의 비전과 실천의 시대 전환적 의의는 지나치게 외면 받고 평가 절하되어 온 반면, 그들의 신앙과 신학의 묵시적, 무정부적 성격, 그리고 실천들이 보여준 혁명적이 고 폭력적인 성향들은 편향적으로 부각되어 왔다. 이는 아이러니하게도 종교개혁 당시 급진주의 개혁가들이 루터와 츠빙글리와 같은 소위 관료후원적 종교개혁가들에 의해 거 부되었고, 그들의 승인과 신학적 지지를 등에 업은 당시 지배세력인 제후들과 귀족에 의해 철저한 불관용과 탄압을 받았기 때문이다. 본 논문의 목적은 ‘역사/재구성적’ 관점을 가지고 독일 농민봉기의 역사와 성격을 성찰하는 것, 그리고 주류 개혁가들과 세속당국 사이의 결탁에 의한 농민봉기 억압의 타당성에 대한 질문을 비평적으로 재고하는 데 있다. 본 논문은 먼저 군주와 귀족, 신흥 부르주아(시민계급), 그리고 농민과 도시 하층민 등 각 계층과 주체의 관계들에 비추어 16 세기 초 중앙 유럽의 사회적 조건들(social conditions), 즉 정치/경제적 상황을 분석하고, 특히 관계와 책임(relationships & responsibilities)의 관점들로 봄으로써 농민봉기의 역사를 하나의 사회사로 재구성한다. 다음으로 논문은 주류 개혁가들과 세속당국의 결탁에 의한 농민봉기 탄압의 정당성 이 슈를 관료후원적 종교개혁(Magisterial Reformation)의 문제와 연결시켜 비평적으로 취급한다. 또한 필자는 ‘구성신학/constructive theology/적’ 관점을 사용하여 뮌처와 같은 재세례파 성향 급진주의 개혁가들의 종말론적, 혁명적 비전들이 가진 사회/정치적 함의들을 논할 것이다. 끝으로 필자가 제안하려는 것은, 독일 농민봉기는 근대 이전 기 독교적 공산주의 실험의 하나로 간주될 수 있고, 그것이 소위 기독교적 사회주의의 정 치/경제적 모델의 발전에 역할을 해 왔으며, 오늘의 독일의 경우 가난과 전쟁 난민의 문제 등에 대한 응답으로서 사회복지(Diakonie)와 같은 국가적 문제들을 다룰 수 있게 한다는 것이다.

Abstract

The study of the history of the Radical Reformation, especially of revolutionary reformers such as Thomas Müntzer, shows that the apocalyptic and anarchic character of the radicals’ faith and theology and the revolutionary and the violent tendencies of their practices have been overemphasized, while the era-changing significance of their vision and practice has been disregarded. Ironically, the reforming radicals suffered from merciless intolerance and oppression by the ruling princes and nobles, who had obtained theological approval and support from the so-called magisterial reformers, notably Luther and Zwingli. The purpose of this paper is to critically reconsider the history and nature of the German peasants’ uprising from a 'historical-reconstructive' perspective, as well as the question of the legitimacy of the suppression of the peasants’ uprising by the collusion between the mainstream reformers and the secular authorities. The paper first examines the politico-economic situation of Central Europe in the early 16th century, reflected in the relations between monarchs, the aristocracy, the emerging bourgeoisie, and the peasants, and attempts to reconstruct the history of the peasants’ uprising as a social history by looking at it from the viewpoint of “relationships and responsibilities.” Next, the paper critically approaches the issue of the intolerance and oppression of the radical movements in relation to the problems of the magisterial reformation. Also, using the perspective of constructive theology, the paper discusses the socio-political implications of the revolutionary and eschatological visions and practices of radicals like Müntzer. Finally, the writer suggests that the German peasants’ revolt can be regarded as experiments of pre-modern Christian communism, which had a role in the development of the economic and political model of so-called Christian socialism. Today a case in point is Germany, working to address national problems such as social welfare ( ) in response to the problem of hunger and refugees from war.
