Abstract

The history of the Radical Reformation shows that during the Reformation, the oppression and persecution of ‘intolerance’ was carried out not only by the Roman Catholic Church but also by Protestant factions. Ironically, Protestants, who called for freedom of religion-that is, freedom of conscience-refused to grant the very freedom they sought to the Anabaptists and the radicals inspired by new or liberal ideas. The slogans of the radical reformers were rejected by the magisterial reformers such as Luther and Zwingli. The reforming radicals suffered from intolerance and merciless oppression by the ruling princes and nobles, who had obtained theological approval and support from the magisterial reformers. This was primarily because the division and disorder promoted by radicals were regarded as an essential and serious threat to the ‘Christian world’ (corpus Christianum), which was to be realized through union, unity, and order among church and state (society). The purpose of this paper is to critically reconsider the issues of ‘freedom of conscience’ and ‘religious tolerance’, commonly raised when studying the Reformation, from a “historical-reconstructive” perspective. It focuses on the case of Michael Servetus, dealing with his heresy trial and execution, and Calvin's involvement. Rather than focusing on doctrinal or theological controversies, this paper, emphasizing the social/political backgrounds seen through historical reconstruction, is to discuss the concept of the ‘Christian world’ (corpus Christianum) as the dominant zeitgeist of Western European Christian society at the time of the Reformation. While Servetus sought to rely on both religious and secular authorities (powers) but was rejected by the prevailing ideals of the time due to his humanistic methods and liberal ideas, Calvin, on the other hand, found himself in a relationship of conflict and tension with secular powers, due to the nature of his reformation (theology), but was, paradoxically, at the request of the time, and further in cooperation with the time, able to implement his vision of reform and theology in practice. This paper notes the concern that Protestant reformers, in order to adapt themselves to the atmosphere of the time, utilized public power beyond what Catholics did when condemning and oppressing ‘radicals', that is, they stood in solidarity and cooperated with magistrates. Paying attention to this, the paper will discuss further the nature and problems of the ‘Magisterial Reformation'.
