본 연구는 급진 종교개혁운동에서 칼뱅의 독단에 맞섰던 카스텔리옹의 평화윤 리 사상에 대한 연구이며, 그것은 종교에 대해 다른 견해를 가진 자들에 대한 종교적 관용을 옹호한 그의 평화주의에 초점이 맞추어진다. 연구자는 당대의 권 력자 칼뱅과 그의 추종자들에게 숨을 거두는 그 순간까지 공격을 받았으나 이에 굴하지 않고 평화적인 방식으로 맞섰으며 그 시대의 종교인들에게 신앙적으로 다른 의견을 가진 자들에게 관용을 호소했던 카스텔리옹의 사상을 그의 저술들을 통해 고찰한다. 먼저, 리옹의 삼위일체 대학에서 학문적 능력을 인정받은 인문주 의자 카스텔리옹이 종교개혁운동에 뛰어들어 칼뱅의 추종자가 되는 과정과 칼뱅 과 갈등의 씨앗이 싹트는 계기를 검토한다. 둘째, 칼뱅과 카스텔리옹의 본격적인 대결은 세르베투스가 제네바에서 화형당하는 사건이 크나큰 계기로 자리하는 바, 세르베투스의 처형을 둘러싼 칼뱅과 카스텔리옹의 논쟁이 검토된다. 셋째, 세르 베투스의 처형 사건으로 촉발된 종교적 관용에 대한 논쟁을 카스텔리옹과 칼뱅과 칼뱅의 추종자 베즈의 저술을 통해 검토한다. 칼뱅의 <정통신앙의 옹호, 카스텔리옹의 <이단에 관하여>, 카스텔리옹의 글을 반박한 베즈의 <反벨리우스론>, 칼 뱅과 베즈에 대해 반박한 카스텔리옹의 <칼뱅의 글 논박>과 <위정자의 처벌 불가론>이 고찰된다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 카스텔리옹의 이단 개념과 세상의 혼란에 대한 책임이 이단에 있는 것이 아니라 오히려 종교적 광신과 불관용에 있음을 주목한다. 넷째, 본 연구는 카스텔리옹의 <의심과 신뢰의 기술에 관하여>를 통해 종교개혁시대의 정통주의 신학에 어떻게 도전했는지를 해명하고, 프랑스에서 위 그노 전쟁이 발발하자 즉각 발표한 <황폐해진 프랑스에 대한 충고>를 통해 그의 평화에 대한 열망을 규명한다.
Abstract
This study aims to study Castellion’s thought of peace ethic which confronted that of a violently assertive Calvin in Geneva in the radical Reformation movement. And this study focuses on his advocacy of religious tolerance and pacifism. Even though Castellion had been attacked by Calvin and his followers until his death, he confronted his antagonists in a peaceful way, and urged religionists who have power in the Reformation movement to tolerate people with different views of faith. Firstly, this research examines the aspect as a humanist Castellion, who had been recognized for his scholastic ability at the Trinity University in Lyon, became a follower of Calvin and the seeds of conflict with Calvin was germinated. Secondly, a decisive moment of the full-fledged confrontation between Calvin and Castellion is considered to be a tragic history for Servetus to be burned to death in Geneva, in which their debates on the execution of Servetus is reviewed. Thirdly, the debate over religious tolerance triggered by the execution of Servetus is examined through the writings of Castellion, Calvin and Calvin’s follower Beze. Lastly, this study deals with Castellion’s pacifist ethic idea, explaining how he challenged orthodox theology in the era of Reformation, and exploring how much he desires and calls for world peace through his advice on a desolate France when the Huguenot war broke out.
