Abstract

This study investigates the transition of Korean theology from Minjung Theology, which responded to the Era of Oppression (1970s), to Mudeung Theology, which responds to the contemporary polycrisis, by analyzing the shift from “Liberation of the Public Square (Madang)” to “Ecological Hospitality of the House(Oikos).” The research posits the need to overcome the anthropocentric limits of classical liberation theology and expand the theological horizon to embrace the global oikos in the face of climate breakdown and neoliberal polarization. The methodology employs a socioecological hermeneutics, contrasting Minjung Theology’s “Public Square-Centric Liberation” with Mudeung Theology’s “Oikos-Centric Ecology.” The analysis confirms a continuous transformation, where Mudeung Theology constructively inherits the prophetic spirit of its predecessor. Minjung Theology established a Political Liberation Paradigm, mobilizing the historical Minjung(ochlos) to fight against visible oppression in the Madang. In contrast, Mudeung Theology presents a socioecological paradigm, expanding the subject to the life community and grounding its ethics in ecological hospitality and care(Salim) within the oikos, drawing from Donghak's mutuality and Lee Hyun-pil's kenotic spirituality. This signifies a movement of theological concern from human liberation to creation justice and cosmic reconciliation. In conclusion, Mudeung Theology provides a concrete pastoral vocation for the Korean Church to move beyond growth models toward becoming the “oikos of life,” where the local community and planetary life are subjects of Salim (saving/ caring). It firmly establishes itself as a model for realizing the integrated theological mandate required in the age of climate crisis.
