무등신학에 나타난 한국적 사회생태윤리 : 이현필의 맨발의 영성을 중심으로

이 논문은 광주와 전라권을 중심으로 흘러온 그리스도교 신앙 전통을 구성신학의 방법으로 분석하여 지역의 토속적 영성을 체계화한 무등신학을 중심으로 사회생태윤리와 한국 고유의 문화적, 역사적, 생태적 맥락 사이의 상호작용을 탐구한다. 무등신학은 자기비움(케노시스)과 사회봉사(디아코니아)가 특징으로, 대표적으로 맨발의 영성가로 알려진 이현필과 그가 설립한 수도공동체인 동광원 및 사회복지기관인 귀일원을 통해 현재까지 이어지고 있다. 무등(無等)은 “평등이 온전하게 이루어져서 차별이나 계급 간의 갈등이 없어지고 평등이라는 개념조차 사라진 상태”를 가리키는 것으로, 광주를 중심으로 활동한 선교사, 목회자, 자생적 영성가의 삶과 신앙에서 공통적으로 발견되는 윤리적 요소를 한 마디로 표현한 단어이다. 무등신학의 관점에서 살펴본 이현필의 영성은 자발적인 참여, 금욕주의적 절제, 그리고 청빈, 순결, 순명의 윤리적 실천을 품고 있다. 아울러 개인의 영적인 체험을 중요하게 여기면서도 영적인 교만을 경계하며, 다양한 사회적 약자를 돕기 위해 공동체를 형성하고 지역사회의 교회나 병원 등과 연대하여 한국적 사회생태윤리의 전형적인 면모를 보여주었다. 무등신학에 나타난 한국적 사회생태윤리는 사회정의와 생태정의를 동시에 강조하고, 기후붕괴가 다른 모든 불의를 증폭시키고 있는 지구 공동체에 신학적인 대안을 제시할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This paper explores the interplay between socioecological ethics and Korea's unique cultural, historical, and ecological context by analyzing the Christian faith traditions that have been practiced in Gwangju and Jeolla Province through the method of constructive theology, focusing on Mudeung Theology, which systematized local indigenous spirituality. Characterized by self-emptying (kenosis) and social service (diakonia), Mudeung Theology has been passed down to the present day through Lee Hyun-Phil, known as the barefoot spiritualist, and the monastic community he founded, Donggwangwon, and the social welfare organization Guilwon. The word ‘mu-deung’ refers to “a state of complete equality, where there is no discrimination or class conflict, and even the concept of equality has disappeared,” and is a word that describes the ethical elements found in the lives and beliefs of the missionaries, pastors, and homegrown spiritualists centered in Gwangju. Lee's spirituality, viewed through the lens of Mudeung Theology, embraces voluntary participation, ascetic discipline, and the ethical practices of noble poverty, chastity, and obedience. In addition, he emphasized the importance of individual spiritual experience but warned against spiritual pride, and he formed communities to help various socially disadvantaged people and partnered with local churches and hospitals, showing typical aspects of Korean socioecological ethics. The Korean socioecological ethics expressed in Mudeung Theology emphasizes the simultaneous promotion of social and ecological justice, and may offer a theological alternative to the global community where climate collapse is amplifying all other injustices.
