Abstract
This paper examines the theological characteristics shown in the process of the Hellenists expelled from Jerusalem after the martyrdom of Stephen and spreading their missionary activities throughout Judea and Samaria. In particular, in Acts 8:4-13, we will examine the position of the Hellenists on mission through the missionary activities carried out in Samaria by Philip, another leader of the Hellenists. His activities are summarized in his ‘words’ accompanied by ‘signs’ and the contents of ‘the kingdom of God’ and ‘the name of Jesus Christ’. Philip is succeeding the ministry of Jesus in that he shows the power and presence of God by enabling the Samaritans to experience salvation and liberation as freedom from demons, disease, and uncleanness through signs. What is important at this time is that the sign is not the center of missionary activities but serves to confirm the authority and power of the Word. One of the contents of the words Philip proclaimed in Samaria was the kingdom of God. The kingdom of God, which was the central content of Jesus’ proclamation, is the sum of faith and proclamation in Acts, and refers to Jesus or appears alongside Jesus Christ. When the church preaches Jesus, it proclaims the kingdom of God that he demonstrated through his life. What is noteworthy is the fact that, other than Paul, this appears only in Philip, not in the apostles such as Peter, and that the object of this proclamation of the Kingdom of God extends to Samaria, the periphery of Judaism. What Philip proclaimed along with the kingdom of God was the name of Jesus Christ. The name of Jesus represents his presence on earth after his resurrection. Philip proclaims this name and performs miracles in this name, causing the Samaritans to believe in Jesus Christ and be baptized. In conclusion, the understanding of the Hellenists on mission derived from the story of Philip’s mission to Samaria can be summarized in three points. First, the Hellenists have a more open understanding of missions compared to the Hebrews. Second, the Hellenists are entirely inheriting Jesus’ ministry of the kingdom of God. Third, Philip’s mission to Samaria was the first step toward non-Jewish mission that went beyond the boundaries of Judaism.
