Abstract

Firstly, the analysis based on the words of ‘gospel, evangelise, and proclamation’ results in the conclusion that (1) in Acts ‘gospel’ and ‘evangelise’ are essential, (2) the proclamation of the gospel in Acts refers to proclaiming Jesus and the kingdom of God, (3) the gospel proclaimers become more and more differentiated from the first period (Acts 1:4-6:7a) to the fourth one (19:21-28:31), and (4) the more elements are included from the first to the fourth. Secondly, we can say that not only ‘covenant’ but also ‘gospel’ is connected with the ‘witness’ and the related words. Thirdly, this study deals with the ‘kingdom’ concept in Acts. The apologetic purpose in Acts has met a strong counterpart which emphasises Jesus’ Lordship and links the Roman empire to the Satanic kingdom. However, the Roman empire can be seen as a region where the gospel should be proclaimed in that (1) the devil’s remark in Luke 4:9 can be a lie, (2) the economic culture found in Acts 2 and 4 belongs to the first period in Acts, and (3) Paul’s sermon and defence can be associated more with his attitudes to the audience than with political officers. As a result, the kingdoms can be structured as a concentric circle. In terms of the degree of obedience to God’s ruling power, the kingdom of God is at the core, and then the place for evangelism including the Roman empire, and lastly the Satanic kingdom, the place for those who do not want to obey God but should have been subdued by God’s commandments. In conclusion, this study shows that the gospel concept in Acts can be understood thoroughly with the ‘witness’ and ‘kingdom’ notions, and that the ‘gospel’ in Acts can be identified with the ‘God’s Kingdom gospel witness’.
