Abstract

This study examines the history of Protestant and Catholic missions in West Kalimantan, a region in western Borneo, Indonesia, and explores the process of local church independence. West Kalimantan is a multicultural region where various ethnic groups such as the Dayak, Malay (Melayu), and Chinese (Tionghoa) communities coexist. It is a complex space where religious receptivity, conflict, and identity formation are intricately intertwined. The paper traces the missionary efforts of Western missionaries from the 19th century, including evangelism, church planting, and educational and medical missions. In particular, it highlights the activities and contributions of the Jesuits, the Capuchin Order, the Methodist Church, the Christian and Missionary Alliance (CAMA), the Reformed Church in America (RCA), and Korean missionaries. The study also analyzes issues such as localization, inland mission strategies, inter-ethnic conflicts (especially clashes involving the Madurese, Malays, and Dayaks), the social expansion of Christian communities, and crises in religious identity. Furthermore, the recent involvement of Korean missionaries has contributed to the formation of a new missionary landscape through collaborative models with local churches. This opens up possibilities for church self-reliance, indigenous leadership, and holistic mission. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the importance of missionary insight, cooperation, and localized Gospel practice in multicultural and multi-religious societies. It proposes alternative directions for the future of mission work.
