Abstract
This article presents a Christian cultural anthropological approach to adat, a traditional Indonesian practice. Indonesia is a country of many different races and cultures, and adat refers to the traditional norms and customs that have remained unique to each region. Indonesian Muslims are deeply connected to adat along with Islam, and both have a strong influence on the Indonesian worldview and daily life. This paper analyzes how adat is maintained in differ- ent parts of Indonesia and how it affects Christian mission and cultural understanding. Eight regions are covered-Riau, Lampung, West Kalimantan, Bali, Ambon, North Halmahera, North Sumba, and Papua-and the role of adat in maintaining community identity, conflict resolution, environmental stewardship, and interfaith dialogue and reconciliation are discussed. They serve as a tool for balancing traditional values with contemporary needs, and they also play an important social and legal role in contemporary societies. Christian cultural anthropology emphasizes that it is not enough for Christian mission to simply understand the surface beliefs of Muslims; it is important to gain a deep understanding of the local adat and their worldview. This provides a way for Christianity to share the gospel in a way that honors the local culture and does not produce a split-level Christianity.
