이 논문은 지난 백여 년 동안 한국 개신교가 걸어온 사회적 행보들을되짚어 본다. 과거 역사의 재구성 차원보다 역사적 맥락과 흐름에 주목하며 한국 교회가 시대의 변곡점마다 직면했던 딜레마의 실체가 무엇인지 들여다보는 데 목적이 있다. 최근 연구들을 살펴보면 해방 이전과 이후를 분리하여 다루는 경향이 뚜렷하다. 하지만 이러한 분리가 어디에서비롯된 것인지, 어떤 요인들이 작동한 결과인지, 구체적으로 무엇이 달라진 것인지 설명이 필요해 보인다. 동시에 세계적 흐름과의 연동성도함께 들여다볼 필요가 있다. 한국 기독교는 서구 선교사들의 세계 선교일환으로 시작되었기에 처음부터 국제 사회의 변화에 민감하게 작동할수밖에 없었다. 이는 한국 기독교가 한국 사회의 내부적 요구뿐 아니라, 세계 교회가 지향하는 보편 가치나 시대적 과제도 함께 고민하고 공유해왔음을 의미한다. 한마디로 한국 기독교의 사회적 행보는 국내 시간표와국제 시간표가 맞물리는 형태로 진행되었다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 이지점에서 안팎의 괴리, 속도의 차이, 문화적 충돌, 양립할 수 없는 숱한딜레마들을 경험했다. 물론 한국이 갖는 지형 자체가 외부적 변수들이강하게 작동하는 사회라는 점도 빼놓을 수 없다.
Abstract
This study reflects on the history of Christianity and its social movement in Korea from a global perspective. It explores social challenges and historical dilemmas that Christians faced. When addressing the Korean Christian social movement, recent studies tend to separate the Enlightenment and the Japanese colonial periods from the post-liberation era. But little attention is paid to the reasons for the historical discontinuities, how they originated and why they occurred. At this point we must not overlook the fact that Korean Christianity and its social movement had been closely linked to the global history of Christianity which was itself in transition. While the early movements took place within the orbit of the foreign missionary enterprise, a movement designed by Western evangelists, the later movements aligned with the ecumenical movement that emerged with the World Council of Churches, which was founded in 1948. The emergence of the ecumenical movement meant a paradigm shift for Christian missions; it paved the way for dismantling Western expansionism and taking responsibility for global issues. Korean Christianity experienced deep gaps between domestic and international contexts, various cultural conflicts, and incompatible dilemmas. Particularly, Korean Christians inspired by ecumenism were confronted with the social tension between conservative churches and progressive social organizations in the post-liberation era; this division was made more serious by the rapid growth of the conservative churches in tandem with capitalist expansionism.
