Abstract

As the translation and dissemination of the Quran have significantly increased worldwide, the question of how to translate the Islamic divine name “Allah” into foreign languages has become an important issue. Since the late 20th century, many Muslim translators in the West have been rendered “Allah” as “God”, while in South Korea, it has been translated as “Hana-nim”, a term for “God” primarily used by Korean Protestants. Through the study of various fatwas and teachings of Islamic scholars(sheikhs), it has been confirmed that translating “Allah” as “God” or "Hana-nim” is not permissible. Additionally, it has been observed that in Islamic religious rituals — such as the Shahada(testimony of faith), Adhan(call to prayer), Salah(prayer), Quran recitation, and sermons — the name “Allah” is never translated but is always pronounced in its original form. Therefore, the attempt to translate “Allah” as “God” or “Hana-nim” is not based on Islamic teachings but rather originates from Da‘wah(Islamic missionary efforts) aimed at introducing Islam to non-Muslim communities. Based on these findings, Muslims and scholars in South Korea should recognize that translating “Allah” as “Hana-nim” does not align with Islamic jurisprudence and should cease using such translations. Calling the Islamic deity “Allah” instead of “Hana-nim” is not only a more accurate understanding of Islam but also a demonstration of respect for Muslims.
