Abstract

This study aims to analyze the historical, theological, and juridical aspects of the division and diversity within Islam, examine the various religious and social currents in the contemporary Islamic world, and propose missional approaches for PCK(Presbyterian Church of Korea). Over 1,400 years, Islam has developed a complex structure influenced not only by theological differences but also by political power struggles, cultural transformations, and changing social contexts. The division between Sunni and Shia Islam following the death of Muhammad stemmed from fundamental ideological conflicts over political legitimacy and religious authority rather than mere doctrinal differences. Within Sunni Islam, various theological interpretations exist, including the Mu‘tazila, Ash‘ari, and Salafi schools. Additionally, the four major Sunni legal schools-Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi‘i, and Hanbali-exhibit distinct approaches in interpreting and applying Sharia. Sufism and Folk Islam further diversify Islamic traditions by integrating mystical elements and local customs. This study examines how these divisions and diversities manifest in specific regions, particularly in Indonesia, where Islam interacts with adat(local customs) to form unique religious practices. Furthermore, it explores how contemporary Islam engages with Western modernity and how globalization and diaspora reshape Islamic religious identity. The study argues that assuming a monolithic image of Islam in Christian missions does not reflect reality and calls for a multi-layered approach that considers the distinct characteristics of each region and community. Finally, it emphasizes the need for PCK to shift their missionary strategies from short-term awareness campaigns to a more balanced understanding of Muslim faith and culture, integrating this knowledge into practical missional applications.
