Abstract
Eugene O'Neill, directly or indirectly, deals with his family relationship, which has followed him like an obsession all his life long, in his plays, and there, in the domestic tragedies like this, appear the various aspects of reconciliation and integration for the liberation from conflict and disintegration between father and mother, between father and son, between mother and son, and between brothers. The aim of this thesis is to study both the cause and development of disintegration and the chance and realization of integration in his most representative domestic tragedies embodying this theme, Beyond the Horizon, Desire Under the Elms, and Long Day's Journey into Night, and analyze the similarities and differences in them. The characters in them go through such various disintegrations as conflict, confrontation, frustration, struggle, resentment, blame, hate, selfishness, materialism, love, desire, and passion, and finally achieve such integrations as Robert's death in Beyond the Horizon, love between Abbie and Eben in Desire Under the Elms, and Edmund's transcendence in Long Day's Journey into Night. O'Neill, through the various aspects of disintegration and integration in them, suggests the most fundamental and important truth that the ultimate realization of integration of our life is the liberation from disintegration by true understanding, forgiveness, love, and transcendence based on our genuine introspection and confession.
