Abstract
This paper examines the death-wish of four main characters at the journey between Eros and Thanatos in Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night. I will analyze crucial causes which led the family to tragic situations in the past, then examine their fatal life as prisoners in the present. Finally I will illuminate their death-wish as a way of gaining their liberty in the future. Mary and Tyrone were each ignorant about themselves and did not know their partner before their wedding. Structural problems such as money and economic power underlie the shocking incidents they experienced after wedding. After Mary’s morphine addiction, their home lost its function moved by Eros and turned into a prison with doubtful eyes. The home where family members are under permanent surveillance is a hell in which all of the sinners feel pain with guilt, blame each other, and lose future forever. The change from lively Act 1 to horrible despair in the final scene shows that all the family already arrive at a dark territory of Thanatos.
