Abstract

This paper aims at investigating the ways in which the poetic speaker functions in Mary Robinson’s Lyrical Tales. As the affinity of its title to William Wordsworth and S. T. Coleridge’s Lyrical Ballads suggests, Robinson attempts to deliberately repeat and revise the male poets’ project in her poetic collection. Especially, Wordsworth’s deep interest in the relationship between the poetic speaker and the subject matter in his poems influences Robinson’s own experimentation. In Robinson’s “All Alone,” which resembles Wordsworth’s “We Are Seven” in its theme of death and conversational style, the speaker fails to fully sympathize with the child destitute of any material means and familial connections. While “We Are Seven” focuses on the girl’s somewhat existential view of life and death, “All Alone” foregrounds the wretched situation of the boy who has lost family members as well as a formerly warm abode. Robinson also employs a Wordsworthian poetic speaker, who performs a minimal role in the poem and sets a stage for marginalised ‘others’ to tell their own stories. Robinson’s “The Negro Girl” is an excellent example that leads the reader to listen to the story from the very person who has experienced hardships due to the socio/historical conditions of the time. Robinson’s skillful use of various narrative strategies in her poems appears to be affected by her former experience of theatricality. Although Wordsworth ultimately chooses the direction toward the creation of an authentic, internalizing self that fuses the poet and the speaker, Robinson’s more theatrical approach to poetic composition contains an impulse toward a new poetic mode that resembles the dramatic monologue.
