Abstract

This study explores the theological relationship between Missio Dei and redemptive history, with particular focus on the 140th anniversary of the arrival of Protestant missionaries H.G. Appenzeller and H.G. Underwood in Korea in 1885. Since the transmission of the gospel, the Korean church has undergone rapid growth and indigenization, transforming from a mission field into a missional agent. This transformation should not be understood merely as numerical expansion but as part of God’s redemptive work in history. The concept of Missio Dei emphasizes that mission is not a human-initiated endeavor but an integral aspect of God’s salvific work from creation to eschaton. However, the contemporary Korean church faces critical challenges, including secularization, declining church membership, and the limitations of traditional mission models. In response, this study calls for the recovery of biblical mission theology, the development of contextualized mission models, the expansion of postcolonial and diaspora missions, and the implementation of holistic mission that includes social responsibility. Ultimately, the author argues that the history of Korean Protestant missions is a manifestation of Missio Dei within redemptive history, and that the Korean church must remain faithful to the essence of redemptive mission, preserving the integrity of the gospel amid the challenges of a rapidly changing age.
