편지는 시간이 지나면서 없어지게 되지만, 기관과 개인 소장 기록물로서여러 곳에 흩어져 단편적으로 남아 있게도 된다. 선교사를 한국으로 많이 보낸 미국과 캐나다는 역사 기록물 관리에 특별한 관심과 전통을 자랑하는 나라답게 많은 양의 내한 선교사 자료가 여러 종류의 기록관에 보존하고 있다. 본 논문의 목적은 북미 기록관에 소장되어있는 내한 교육 선교사의 편지를총체적으로 정리하는 것으로, 이를 통해 내한 교육 선교사들의 편지가 보전되어 있는 전모를 파악하는 것이다. 나아가 본 연구는 내한 선교사를 편지를소장하고 있는 기록관들이 이 자료들을 얻게 된 방법에 따라 네 가지 유형(‘교단문서 유형’, ‘선교사 가족 기증 유형’, ‘후원자 기증 유형’, ‘기록관 구입 유형’)으로 자료의 컬렉션의 타입을 분류하여, 방대한 자료들이 보존된경위를 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 또 본 논문은 현재 이런 편지들을 연구하는 연구자들에게 흥미로운 자료들을 각 컬렉션 타입 별로 소개하였다. 이를 통하여 이 분야의 연구자들은 어떤 유형의 컬렉션을 자신의 연구를 위해 우선적으로 접근해야할 지에 대한 기초자료가 될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
Letters tend to disappear over time, but some end up as archival materials in different depositories. The United States and Canada, the two countries that have sent the most Protestant missionaries to Korea, have preserved many different kinds of missionaries’ materials in various archives. The purpose of this paper is to comprehensively summarize the whereabouts of letters sent by educational missionaries in Korea that are now preserved in the North American archives. In addition, this study aims to classify the types of letter collections into four types according to the manner in which the archives acquired the letters: (1) official letters in the Protestant denominations depositories; (2) personal letters preserved in either personal or family archival collections; (3) letters in financial donors’ personal archival collections; and (4) letters purchased by archives. While describing these four types, this paper will introduce some specific collections that will be of interest to researchers. It is hoped that this paper will provide guidance for researchers seeking to access letters sent by North American educational missionaries to Korea.
