Abstract
This paper will explore the implications that the perspec tives of medieval Christian theologians can offer for the theo logical direction in which modern Christianity can engage in dialogue with Islam. In order to achieve this objective, it will examine the manners in which they comprehended and re sponded to Islam. In response to the rapid expansion of Is lam and Arab military conquests, the medieval Christian world sought to interpret Islam from a variety of perspectives, which resulted in the formation of distinctive theological perspectives on Islam. Medieval Christian theologians John of Damascus and Peter the Venerable evaluated Islam in various ways and proposed response measures. John of Damascus was the first early Christian theologian to define Islam as a theological her esy and to critique Arab conquest and Islamic doctrine. Peter the Venerable endeavored to equip European Christians with a comprehensive understanding of Islam by examining its doc trines and historical roots. This paper will examine the way in which medieval Christian theologians viewed Islam by focusing on the writings of John of Damascus and Peter the Vener able and illuminating the theological basis of their criticisms of Islam as well as the core Islamic doctrines. In particular, the paper will investigate how medieval Christianity evaluated and interpreted the Islam of the time through their theological approach and draw lessons from the medieval theologians’ perceptions of Islam for how modern Christianity views and approaches its relationship with Islam.
