Abstract

This study analyzes recurring structural problems in Ko rean mission practices from the perspective of Missional Pa thology. It introduces Koreanism as a key concept, highlighting how the monoethnic identity of Korean society, the experience of compressed modernity, and the growth narrative of Korean Protestantism have shaped missionaries’ cultural biases. Case studies from Brazil and Indonesia illustrate how Koreanism is manifested through hierarchical pastor-centered leadership, growth- and success-oriented discourse, mismatches in relational and leadership styles, and direct communication patterns that conflict with local cultural values. While not denying the positive assets of Korean mission, this study emphasizes the necessity for missionaries to critically reflect on their ethno centric approaches and to seek mutual respect and contextual indigenization in mission practice. Through such efforts, Korean missions may move beyond quantitative expansion toward qualitative maturity and foster healthier, sustainable partner ships with churches in the Global South.
