Abstract
This study analyzes the missional church model of Adelphoi Church, focusing on its role as an academic platform church and its intergenerational collaborative structure, to explore strategies for vitalizing early-retired professional missions. The growing need for lay missionaries with specialized skills, particularly early retirees, who possess expertise, financial in dependence, and spiritual maturity, is a crucial resource for modern missions. The ‘FIRE movement’(Financial Independence, Retire Early) trend reflects a desire to live the latter half of life meaningfully, unconstrained by work, which can be connected to mission as a lifelong calling. Adelphoi Church is a pioneering example of a missional church model that puts this vision into practice. By being located in a shopping mall, it coexists with the local community. It actively trains lay missionaries through its ‘professional missionary training for key leaders.’ Furthermore, the church contributes to bridging the gap between theory and practice by establishing the ‘Korea Gospel and Mission Institute’ through the collaboration of retired professor Kim Seong-wook and Pastor Lim Dong-hyun. This unique intergenerational cooperation model creates synergy in knowledge transfer, promoting innovation, and developing sustainable mission leadership by combining academic depth with practical dynamism. In conclusion, this study confirms that Business as Mission (BAM), which leverages the strengths of early-retired professionals and pastors, is a significant paradigm for modern missions. Mobilizing early retirees as a mission resource in a changing social and pastoral environment will be an effective strategy to present a new direction for the Korean church and global missions.
