한국 개신교회 순교자 추서 역사와 기준에 관한 소고

초록

이 글은 한국 개신교 순교자 추서 역사를 비판적으로 살피고 순교자 추서 기준을 마련하기 위한 연구이다. 살아 있는 자들의 죽음에 대한 정치로서 순교자 추서 구조를 염두에 두고, 이 글은 우선 시기별로 한국 개신교회의 순교자 추서 역사를 분석하고 문제점을 지적했다. 한국 개신교의 순교자 추서는 죽임을 당한 자의 증언 혹은 증거와는 별개로 이데올로기적 해석의 틀로 죽음에 대한 기억들을 선택적으로 수집하고, 이데올로기에 맞게 죽음을 과장하거나 윤색하는 등의 구조적 문제점을 드러내고 있다. 일제강점기 토마스 목사에게만 집중된 순교자 추서, 독립운동에 가담하므로 발생한 죽음사건에 대한 침묵, 해방 후 특히 한국전쟁기부터 한국교회 선교 100주년을 기념한 1980년대 이후 오늘에 이르기까지 순교자 추서가 한국전쟁 때 공산군에게 희생당한 죽음사건에 집중한 점에서 발견되는 가장 큰 문제점은 기준 없는 순교자 추서의 ‘작위성’이다. 이를 극복하기 위해 이 연구는 순교자 추서를 위해 네 가지 조건, 즉 박해의 존재, 자발적인 죽음의 수용과 비폭력성, 박해로 인한 실제 죽음, 죽음의 의미가 그리스도를 본받는 실천이어야 함을 제시했다.

Abstract

This paper is a study to critically investigate the history of martyr-making in Korean Protestant Church and offer criteria for martyr-designation. Taking the fact that the mechanism of martyr-making is a politics of the death operated by the living, this paper has first analyzed the history of martyr-making in Korean Protestant Church periodically and pointed out the problems. Apart from witnessing or testimony of the death, martyr-making of Korean Protestant Church has revealed structural problems: selectively collecting memories of death as a frame of ideological interpretation, and exaggerating or embellishing death for political ideology. During the Japanese colonial era, martyr-making focused only on missionary Rev Robert J. Thomas, the silence on the deaths caused by participating in the independence movement, and the era from the liberation to today, especially from the Korean War to the 1980s when the centennial anniversary of missionary work in Korea was celebrated, it focused deeply on the deaths caused by communists. This showed the ‘artificiality’ of martyr-making without any criterion as the biggest problem of making martyrs in Korean Protestant Church. In order to overcome the ‘artificiality’ of martyr-making, this study offered at least four criteria that the martyr's death should be the existence of the persecution, voluntary acceptance of death, actual death caused by persecution, and the semantic of death to be a practice imitating Christ.
