초록

In signlanguages, spatial iconicity is frequently observed in diverse aspects. One aspectis that in a role shift where a signer becomes a role of the person he describes, his body position (and/or eye gaze) becomes higher or lower, depending on theheight of the addressee. For example, in ASL, when a signer signs for GIVE,he extends his arms higher when the address is located higher in his mentalspace. This paper investigates whether the same spatial iconicity is observedin Korean Sign Language as well. Furthermore, the paper explores whether thespatial iconicity, if observed, is metaphorically extended to social hierarchies. The result shows that the spatial iconicity is very well observed in KSL and itextends its meaning based on the metaphor [SOCIAL STATUS IS UP]. Whenpeople with different social status talk to each other, the person with a lowerhierarchy is metaphorically located in a lower position in our mental space andthe metaphorical location is reflected in signers’expressions.
