Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the various changes in the falling diphthongs /oj/ and /uj/, in order to clarify the nature of front monophthongization and rising diphthongization. These changes are explained by internal factors within the falling diphthongs and external factors related to the vowel system. The change from /uj/ to /ɯj/, which lacks a clear phonological motivation, is interpreted as a phenomenon influenced by the spread of unrounding(/uj/>/ɯj/) in the 17th century. The variation from [uj] to [oj] was likewise a temporary occurrence without specific phonological condition. In contrast, /oj/, as observed in changes such as ㅚ>ㅐ, ㅚ>ㅢ, and ㅚ>ㅞ, exhibited both active involvement in phonological change and signs of instability. The changes from ㅚ>ㅐ and ㅚ>ㅢ are explained as downward movements of the vowel. The alternation between ㅚ and ㅞ suggests that ㅚ may have been realized as both a monophthong and a rising diphthong. As instability increased in /o/, which was exposed to shifts in the vowel system, the changes in ㅚ and ㅟ inevitably led to incomplete monophthongization and rising diphthongization. The monophthongization of /ㅢ/ did not result in a new front monophthong but merged into /i/, producing a large number of homophones. Consequently, nucleus shifts occurred between the weak vowel /ɯ/ and /i/, leading to simultaneous front monophthongization and rising diphthongization. Around the same period, the monophthongization and rising diphthongization of ㅚ and ㅟ were also selectively applied.
