Abstract

Director Michel Oslot's Azur & Asmar(2006) is a world-famous French animated fairytale fantasy feature film, which leads us through the magical and fantastic adventures of the two children, Azur and Asmar. This film suggests the communion of the European world with the Islamic world through the two main characters: Azur, the blue-eyed son of a nobleman, and Asmar, the dark-eyed child of a nurse. Oslot known as the “Magician of Light” creates so beautiful visual images through the European and the Islamic art juxtaposed in the wide screen. Jénane shows that all good knowledge is derived from experience in two cultures. Crapoux hints clearly that there are many different cultures in the world, and the important thing is to provoke peaceful coexistence of these cultures. In the final scene, the wedding marches of the two couples imply the marriage of two different cultures is the smart way to happiness. In this way, the film Azur & Asmar deals directly and explicitly with issues of multiculturalism in its characters, settings and events, so this feature could be helpful to multicultural education, especially critical or antiracist multicultural education for children.
