Abstract
This study aims to establish an educational foundation for fostering children’s multicultural sensitivity in a rapidly diversifying society. To this end, it develops and proposes systematic ‘critical analysis standards’ to help educators critically select high-quality multicultural children’s literature and utilize it effectively in educational settings. The proposed framework organically integrates the domain of ‘developmental appropriateness,’ which considers children’s cognitive development, with a ‘critical perspective’ that analyzes the ideology and politics of representation embedded in texts (including character representation, narrative, and visual information). This holds academic significance as an attempt to synthesize a developmental approach with critical theories—such as postcolonialism, intersectionality, and critical race theory—in the evaluation of children’s literature. By developing these multi-layered standards and applying them to the analysis of actual children’s stories, the study verifies their practical validity and applicability. The resulting analytical framework can serve as a tangible tool to help educators critically interpret the ideologies within multicultural stories, thereby enabling them to move beyond superficial cultural introductions toward educational practices that realize social justice.
