문화적 배경이 상이한 ‘그들’을 어떻게 가르칠까?: ‘문화적으로 적절한 교수’(CRT)를 중심으로

우리 교실의 다문화화가 점차 진척되어가는 가운데 과연 교사들은 그들 자신과 문화적 배경이 다른 학생들을 어떻게 가르쳐야 하는가 하는 질문에 직면케 된다. 이러한 질문에 대한 답을 찾기 위하여 연구자는 미국의 ‘문화적으로 적절한 교수’(CRT)에 주목하였는데, 이는 학생들의 다양한 문화적 배경들을 교사가 교실에서 적극적으로 활용하여 가르쳐야 함을 주장하는 다문화 교육 방법론이라 할 수 있다. 연구자는 CRT의 등장 배경부터 원리, 전략, 특징, 그리고 한계점을 포괄적으로 조망하는 가운데, 우리 교실에도 CRT 적용이 적극적으로 이루어질 필요가 있다는 결론을 내리게 되는데, 특히 연구자는 ‘소수 집단 학생의 학업 성취도 역전 프로젝트’의 성격으로 등장한 CRT가 ‘모든 학생의 문화 다양성 다루기 프로젝트’로서 기능할 수 있는 측면도 동시에 가지고 있다는 점을 부각시킴으로써 우리 사회에의 CRT 활용 근거를 제시함과 동시에 이를 위해 수행되어야 할 몇 가지 과제들도 덧붙일 수 있었다.
Abstract
With an advance of a multicultural change in our school classroom, teachers are facing the new question as to how they should teach the students with different cultural background. In one effort to find answers to such a question, the researcher performed a task to review the Culturally Relevant Teaching(CRT), which claims that teachers teach actively to use a variety of cultural background of the students in the classroom. The background, principles, strategies, and features of the CRT were comprehensively reviewed. As a result, the researcher came to the conclusion that we need to be actively applied the principles of the CRT in our school classroom. Especially, the researcher could reveal that the CRT had the new possibility as 'a cultural diversity project to deal with for every students' that could be, and could offer a application of the CRT and series of tasks for implementation of it.
