Abstract
This study explores how literature counseling transformed an individual into an agent of therapeutic arts education through the researcher's renewed reflection on their own poetic writing learning experiences during their graduate program in literature counseling, having grown up as an aspiring poet in an elite literary education environment. Creative writing programs and literature counseling programs both use literature as a medium for distinct forms of arts education, yet their differing learning experiences have not been sufficiently examined and thus require investigation. The significance of this study lies in vividly revealing the experiences of a learner positioned between these two educational domains, thereby promoting new questions and practices for learners with interdisciplinary backgrounds similar to the researcher. This study examined the researcher's poetic writing learning experiences formed within heterogeneous learning cultures through first-person arts-based autoethnography. As a result, three major themes emerged: “(1) ‘Am I a poet?: A writing competition kid’s entry into literature counseling,‘ (2) ’Am I… a teacher?: A clumsy introduction to therapeutic arts education,‘ and (3) ’Living in between.‘” Based on these findings, the final research results are presented as a polyphonic poetry A Three-Tiered Transformation, composed of three sequential poems (‘A Child with No Presence,’ ’A Child in the Mirror,‘ and ‘A Child Playing at the Boundary’). Through this poem, which presents the researcher's identity transformation process as a learner in three stages based on Nietzsche’s theory of the three stages of spiritual transformation—interwoven with learning experiences from each period—the study confirms that literature counseling, which helps generate creative power from the ‘heterogeneity’ and ‘difference’ of disparate elements, can lead to therapeutic arts education experiences for learners in boundary positions.
