초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the cognitive mechanisms, aspects, and semantic properties of construal operations mainly on the sentence level from the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics. The results are as follows: First, construal refers to the cognitive strategy of a conceptual speaker who thinks and describes the same situation in an alternative way, from the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics. The cognitive process is called a construal operation, and meaning is a dynamic process through which a conceptual speaker conceptualizes, on the basis of a linguistic expression. Second, cognitive mechanisms on the sentence level are termed ‘viewpoint’, ‘objectivity-subjectivity’, ‘figure-ground’, ‘focus’, ‘frame’, and ‘directness-indirectness’. Among these, the dimensions of ‘viewpoint’ and ‘figure-ground’ are activated. Third, the aspects of the construal operation on the sentence level are ‘active sentences-passive sentences’, ‘symmetrical constructions’, ‘sentence shift constructions’, ‘word order shift constructions’, ‘ambiguous sentences’, and ‘long-and short-form causative constructions’. which are all activated. Fourth, the results of the survey of ambiguous sentences and long- and short-form causative constructions in order to reveal the semantic properties of construal operations are as follows: In the case of ambiguous sentences; (a) The order of the degree of cognition is ‘the category of comparison>action and manner>the category of negation >the category of the subject>the category of modification>vocabulary>the category of quantifiers’. (b) The semantic construal of ambiguous sentences tends to show the dependence on sentence structures: subjective actions are more obvious in short-form sentences than long-form sentences, and predicates serve as a major parameter when the semantic construals of long-and short-form causative constructions are the same. Two surveys show that the Korean language community shares certain features in terms of construal. And the cognitive tendency is verified in ‘sentence shift constructions’, ‘ambiguous sentences’ and ‘short-form causative constructions’, while cognitive strategies are verified in ‘active sentences-passive sentences’, ‘symmetrical constructions’, ‘word order shift constructions’, and ‘proverbs’.
