Abstract
Embodying the whole process of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, this study aims to analyze Song, Ki-sook's Nokdu Janggun which keeps 'Mt. Jiri' as the central axis of narration space, to investigate the symbolic meaning of Mt. Jiri and then, to find Mt. Jiri's 'cultural identity', which the writer intends to express through the symbolic meaning. First of all, in order to determine the symbolic meaning of Mt. Jiri newly recreated by Song, Ki-sook, the introduction suggested two reasons why he considered Mt. Jiri as the center instead of Gobu or the 4 government-designated battlefields as the center of narration space. The first reason is the experience of Song, Ki-sook who shut himself up in Piagol Valley to write Nokdu Janggun after he got out of Gwangju Correctional Institution due to the 5․18 Gwangju Democratization Movement. Another reason is that he put emphasis on the 'cultural identity' contained in Mt. Jiri, a space which would best reenact the historical incident of the Donghak Peasant Revolution. It is possible that the attribute of a historical novel is a 'reproduction of an historical incident'. Song, Ki-sook symbolically embodied Mt. Jiri as the central space of the Donghak Peasant Revolution in order to save the spirit and soul held only by Mt. Jiri. n Nokdu Janggun, Mt. Jiri is not Mother Nature itself but is a creatively reorganized space by reflecting his world view. Song, Ki-sook symbolically showed the space of Mt. Jiri in the following 3 phases as if he had displayed the history of Mt. Jiri according to a development process of the Donghak Peasant Revolution. The first symbolic meaning of Mt. Jiri is that it was a revolution space as 'a starting place of Donghak thought' which made live coals of the Donghak Peasant Revolution. The second symbolic meaning is the change of Mt. Jiri from an escape space to a central space of a resistance movement. Mt. Jiri, formerly thought of as a shelter, was now systematically preparing the Donghak Peasant Revolution. The third symbolic meaning is that it was an ignition point of proliferating revolution ideology as well as a space of integrity. The meaning of Gyoryongsanseong in Namwon was changed from a place where Choi, Je-Woo first performed a sword dance to a place where Kim, Gae-nam used his sword. Therefore it becomes a symbolic space showing that 'it is rational to cope with non-rationality if non-rationality rules the world'. It is confirmed that the 'cultural identities' of Mt. Jiri, which Song, Ki-sook intended to express through the above 3 symbolic meanings, are 'Joseon's soul', 'Mt. Jiri's soul', and 'Mt. Jiri's sword'. These contain revolutionary ideology. Mt. Jiri was the source of Donghak thought, which was the 'Joseon's soul', and it became 'Mt. Jiri's soul' which sublimates the people's resentment of a new life. It does this by securing historical integrity to become a center of resistance movement from a shelter. And, Choi, Je-Woo's comment that 'it is rational to cope with non-rationality if non-rationality rules the world' as well as Kim, Gae-nam's sword becomes 'Mt. Jiri's sword' and symbolically expresses that a time of 'revolution' can come anytime in the future. As such, Nokdu Janggun reveals the history of mentality and resistance held only by Mt. Jiri through various tales, secrets, and predictions so that it is evaluated as a work best expressing the 'cultural identity' of Mt. Jiri. Currently, spaces in literary works are being developed as various cultural contents as per their respective characteristics. Therefore, if dynamic cultural contents conforming to symbolic meaning and cultural identities contained in Nokdu Janggun are developed according to this situation, it is expected that 'Mt. Jiri' will become a new culture creation space instead of a mere physical existence.
