Abstract

My approach in this paper is based on the concepts of the narrative discourse as exemplified in the works of Gerard Genette and particularly the work of Michel Foucault. It is intended to broadedn our horizon of understanding the meaning of pansori novels. This point of view will be argued in connection with 'jirisan discourse'. Jirisan discourse is imbued with mutidirectional discourse levels ; a shamanist narrative, a pungsu(風水) narrative, a taoist narrative, a buddhist narrative, a confucian narrative etc. Mt. Jiri as space-text, has been interpreted variously in a literary text. It bear throughout the traits of extratextual discourse. Proceeding from this fact, Wanpan-bon(完板本) pansori novels that come from the region which contiguous to Mt. Jiri, should be read in the context of jirisan discourse. Seen from this point of view, the meaning of jirisan discourse in pansori novels is virtually identical to the signs of narrating or narrative mechanism. It is of course not to say that Mt. Jiri as a spatial setting is directly fit into jirisan discourse. To put the point another way, Mt. Jiri as spatial setting is transposed into a form of ‘jirisan discourse’, which generates a extratextual discourse. Presumably, this communication is not concerned with the communication of meaning, but is much more concerned with the communication of a empirical culture. Therefore, the meaning of jirisan in pansori novels must be read into jirisan discourse.
